You’re invited to attend three free tower bell concerts in Newton this summer, played by Cornell alumni chimesmasters:
Saturday, July 13 5:00-6:00pm
Saturday, July 20 5:00-6:00 pm
Saturday, August 10 5:00-6:00pm
These concerts will take place at the First Unitarian Universalist Society in Newton (FUUSN) at 1326 Washington Street, West Newton MA 02465.
The alumni chimesmasters who will be playing are:
Bob Feldman '66 '75
Cathy Longley-Cook '03 '05
They wlll be joined by other players from FUUSN.
You can bring blankets and chairs and sit out on the lawn in front of the church or in the park across the street. If it is raining, FUUSN will provide indoor listening space. We will play a variety of music, including classical and popular. After each concert, you can meet the players in the tower, see how the bells are played, and try ringing a few bells yourself.
FUUSN’s 11 bells comprise an instrument called a “chime," similar to Cornell's 21 bell chime in McGraw Tower. The bells hang in the belfry at the top of FUUSN’s tower, They range in weight from 575 pounds to 3,350 pounds, with a combined weight of almost seven tons. The player rings them by pushing down on 11 wooden hand levers arranged on a playing stand near the top of the tower. Each lever is attached by a cable to a clapper inside a bell. Playing is totally by human effort.
